Small talk

My name is Gin Zhang, I specialize in creating concept art for environments and props.

I enjoy the process of world-building, most of the pieces in my portfolio belong to the same world I've been working on for the past two years, in both drawing and writing. I believe these two mediums are equally important in building a perception that intrigues and convinces the audiences.

I love science fiction, hard-surface, and industrial designs, there's a certain kind of beauty in the precise and calculated balance of form and function. I am attracted to physics since I was a child, but becoming a theoretical physicist is tough—so instead, I explore that realm through my vision and imagination.

When it comes to art forms, I frequently use 3D in the early stages of each project to aid with compositions and blockouts, sometimes I would render an image to its full potential for production purposes. However, I still prefer drawing for its looseness and freedom. Before stepping into the world of concept design, I used to create fine art with ink and ballpoint pen—I guess that experience had a lasting impact on me.

I believe successful concept art is created by including just enough elements and information to tell the story and showcase the design, while leaving room for the audience's imagination—guiding their eyes to interpret possibilities, and allowing their minds to fill in the gaps.

For me, drawing achieves this more beautifully than any other form.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Feel free to check out some of my work, I hope you have fun exploring them.
