Possum (Annihilation means towards nothing)

oil on canvas over panel 40” x 38” A possum sitting in a dark room illuminated by a flash bulb. On the table and floor next to it there are ashtrays, cigarettes, and a bottle of liquor. Composed using photogrammetry scans and sculpted 3d models, from a reference image taken in my family home in Georgia.
Learning Outcomes:
I learned a good deal of lessons on how to handle the layering of paint from this piece. I also learned about how the gesture and composition of the figures in my painting affects people's interpretation. The direct stare of the possum made some people uncomfortable, but it also led some people to humanize it.
