Objectape

Objectape is a playful AR measuring tool inspired by the "banana for scale" meme. The app explores how people instinctively describe size using familiar objects when exact units feel meaningless—"about three bicycles long" just clicks faster than "5.182 meters."

Built in Unity, the project combines intuitive AR interactions, modular coding, and whimsical design features to make measurement both functional and delightful.

Process:

Driven by curiosity and strong interest in AR applications, Claudia and I bravely dove in to this project. We structured the project as crawl-walk-run management approach: get core features working and incrementally adding more advanced features that aligned with our vision! This approach helped us approach complexity in small steps and kept us motivated to reach for more advanced concepts. Weekly tagups on FigJam and version control helped us manage the development as complexity evolved.

Tasks flowed naturally by each person's interest and strength—Claudia owned frontend design and AR UI while I tackled backend mechanics and Unity development. The result: a playful AR app that we're so proud to accomplish in just one class semester!

Learning Outcomes:
  • Code modularity pays off when features compound quickly: backend code was highly organized and was able to scale to advanced features.
  • FigJam enabled a place where we can "brain-dump" ideas and track progress: this acted as our information nexus and made it easy to revisit and pickup week after week! We're proud to say the project was well-executed! We achieved our vision on schedule with realistic weekly goals.
  • Play to each person's strength ...with room to reach: we divvied up tasks based on our personal preferences (such as my interest in vibe-coding) but also giving each other opportunities to do tasks that may at first seem challenging/unknown but rewarding in the end!
