Over the course of fourteen weeks, we were tasked with designing two separate background paintings, each with two variations of time of day (creating four paintings total). The goal of this project was to create a background design that could effectively work in two different lighting scenarios.
For each background design, we started with three compositional layout sketches, with tonal value. Then, after choosing one to move forward with, I took the layout from sketch to lineart, and finally to full-color. After finishing the first version of the painting, I then did three more color layout sketches, exploring other lighting scenarios. Then, I repainted my original painting to express the difference of time of day.
This project gave me valuable insight on the process of designing a scene that can work in multiple lighting contexts, as well as organizational work methods to make the process of repainting more efficient.
