SCI: Lucid Dreaming

“Lucid Dreams” is a Science Channel spot reveal sequence exploring how lucid dreaming offers self-awareness and a way to confront fears through a story about overcoming arachnophobia. A candy-loving character is pulled from their bedroom into a lucid dream overtaken by mechanical spiders. Facing their arachnophobia, they reimagine themselves as jelly, becoming untouchable and overcoming their fear.

Process:

When thinking about lucid dreaming, we had to think about how to approach the dream world and balance it between being surreal and vibrant. Inspired by stop motion and paintings, we wanted to create a world that is plagued by darkness but gives the solution to the question, "How can I overcome my fear through lucid dreaming?"

Learning Outcomes:

We used purple and blue lighting to create a surreal candy world overtaken by spiders, keeping characters muted so the environment set the tone. As the puppet’s colors shift, the world gradually reveals itself and the fear lifts. Cinematic framing, depth of field, particles, and painted lighting help transform the scene from unsettling to unexpectedly beautiful.
