Moonlight Title Sequence

The film, Moonlight explores the journey of self-establishment and its impact on others. This concept follows Chiron's identity formation across three key stages: navigating his homosexuality as a child, solidifying his identity through friendship with Kevin in adolescence, and ultimately embracing his true self as "Black." The narrative structure reflects Chiron's evolving state of mind, starting with calm, escalating tension, and finally reaching acceptance and peace.

Process:

I used acrylic type forms for the letters and attached them to strings to float in the water. Then, using a rubber hose, bubbles were blown to give the type a feeling of movement and to show that they were floating up. Afterwards, color grading and photocomping was done to erase the strings and change the environment that it was orginally shot in. The result was a dark and immersive sequence showing the rise of the type to represent Chiron’s acceptance for who he is.
