Luma is a learning platform that explores traditional musical instruments through design. It translates rhythm and sound into visual systems, making them easier to understand.
The project begins with Indian regional instruments under Gandharva, documenting their form, sound, and context.
It sits at the intersection of sound, culture, and design, creating new ways to engage with musical knowledge.
The project began with research into Indian regional instruments, looking at how they are built, played, and understood within their cultural contexts. Insights from recordings, references, and conversations informed a series of visual explorations, where rhythm, sound, and structure were translated into graphic systems. These experiments shaped the final platform, bringing the content into a clear and navigable format.
The project developed a deeper understanding of how sound can be interpreted through design, especially in translating rhythm and structure into visual systems. It also strengthened skills in research, synthesis, and building clear frameworks for complex cultural content. More importantly, it shifted the approach to design as a tool for access, not just representation.
