Yucca Quilt

The yucca quilt was born from a series of small illustrations, with the idea of depicting the relationship between the yucca plant, yucca moth, and humans. I am super interested in textile/fiber history and so this piece was a part of learning about the cultivation of yucca into fiber. Verities of yucca have been cultivated from California going down into Central America. This particular example is of a Tongva woman in time immemorial preparing yucca leaves to be made into sandals.

Process:

The quilt design was worked out as an illustration first and then I cut out pattern pieces to match the shapes in the illustration. I worked front to back layering the motifs together. The quilting was completed with long running stitches and the appliques were sewn down with a whip stich. The yucca blossoms were made from polyester satin ribbon, melted together, and then sewn on. The yucca moths were the last part and were embroidered on.
