The Weight of Words

Language is never neutral. It carries influence, consequence, and responsibility. Words have the power to inspire hope, provoke fear, unite people, or divide societies. This book examines how language in media, politics, and culture constructs meaning and shapes public perception, emphasizing the need to understand these strategies in today’s polarized, information-saturated environment.

Within my design system, images of everyday people use generative overlays with words that echo their voices, while quotes are set in varying text sizes to reflect how voices from individuals, politicians, media, and other influential figures are amplified differently. In contrast, visuals of politicians and media figures are treated with a halftone line pattern in red, white, and blue to emphasize their power and authority. Together, these elements create layering and depth that draw attention to the content and encourage a more engaged viewing experience.
