Big Wilderness, Small Explorers is a conceptual collaboration between Fjällräven and National Geographic Kids, focused on designing outdoor gear for young campers. The project includes a backpack, sleeping bag, and tent, all tailored to smaller bodies and hands. Emphasizing ease of use, accessibility, and durability, the collection rethinks traditional camping equipment to better support independence, exploration, and confidence in outdoor environments.
The process began with researching young campers and scouting activities to understand their physical abilities, behaviors, and interaction with outdoor gear. I identified key challenges around scale, weight, and usability, particularly for smaller hands and bodies. These insights informed a system-based approach, designing the backpack, sleeping bag, and tent to work together as an intuitive set. Through iterative sketching, I refined each product to improve accessibility, ease of setup, and independence, while maintaining durability for outdoor environments.
