Experimental Font Design

This typeface design is based on Nüshu, a writing system created by women in Jiangyang southern China, to against the prohibition of formal education toward women during the 19th century. Nüshu’s shape looks like leaves and was used to be sewn on fans and clothing as decorative patterns. I extracted the calligraphic strokes from Nüshu and rearranged them into the English alphabet in cursive handwriting.

1st experiment: connect strokes with curve lines and look like a flower pattern, but it’s unreliable and lost its identity as a Chinese character.

2nd experiment: construct based on English cursive handwriting but disconnect every stroke like a Chinese character. It's reliable and still able to present a leaf pattern.
