Sound of Survival

A collage, and visual essay for the Black Politics and Culture class taught by Cedjric Johnson (HHIS-253-01). In order to demonstrate my understanding of the class’s readings and themes for Black Politics & Culture class, I constructed a collage series that explores the evolution of hip hop, mass culture, and the urban struggle.
Learning Outcomes:
Tricia Rose concludes “Rap music more than any other contemporary form of black cultural expression, articulates the chasm between black urban lived experience and dominant ‘legitimate’ (e.g., neoliberal) ideologies regarding equality of opportunity and racial inequality.” This project takes up Rose’s claim.
