The Mikado Shelf

Our lives are becoming more informal, hybrid, nomadic and entertaining. People, especially millennials, either at home or at work, want to be entertained and express their personalities. Brands and designers are working to meet all these needs with a more experimental, interactive and playful design. Furniture and accessories should bring us joy, stimulate our creativity and give us the possibility to express ourselves.

Shelf is an important piece of storage furniture exists almost in every home. Free-standing shelf is a shelf that can be move around and not required mounting to walls. Compared to other shelves, it is more flexible. For this project, my goal is to design a piece of art of storage that aims to make people smile and be a delightful point of any environment it got placed in.

The Inspiration comes from the Mikado game or the pick-up stick game. I like the randomness of the sticks the colorful strips on the sticks and the process of choosing the right stick to pick up and move it without touching the others. So, I want to duplicate the process and visuals.

The Mikado shelf is a freestanding shelf for Living Room. The dimension of the shelf is 40in Height x 40in Width x 14in depth. It includes 3 layers, and each of them are 9.25in and 14in apart. The shelf weighs about 35lb. The Maximum load for the shelf is about 400 lbs.
