BFA in Fine Art — Fine ArtFor Me, For Her
For Me, For Her is a ritual installation by Didi Zhou that intertwines devotion, time, and cultural memory through physical labor and sound. Over the course of 3525 minutes, sacred Daoist scriptures were meticulously hand-copied, five-colored threads—symbols of cosmic balance and spiritual protection—were braided, and each element was carefully sewn onto muslin. The muslin strip extends from ceiling to floor, creating a continuous flow that echoes the cyclical nature of time and ritual.
The work also incorporates an ambient sound recording captured during the entire making process, preserving the subtle sounds of breathing, writing, braiding, and stitching. This sonic layer gives voice to the invisible labor, transforming the space into an immersive environment where time, body, and faith converge.
Rooted in Chinese Daoist cultural traditions and history, For Me, For Her reflects on the endurance of sincerity through repetition, the embodiment of prayer through physical action, and the unseen spiritual connections forged through ritual practice.
