Oldboy Title Sequence

This is a title sequence for the film Oldboy (2003) directed by Park Chan-wook. It's a movie about revenge, with the pursuit of it leading to the downfall of both protagonist and antagonist. The merging of natural and urban landscapes are meant to represent this corruption. As the sequence progresses the natural and urban landscapes move closer together until they eventually combine, the frame itself functioning as the thematic framing device.

Process:

This project is influenced in no small part by Josef Koudelka’s panoramic post-war landscapes. I planned a trip around fitting desolate urban and natural landscapes in the LA area and informed my timing with the weather to maximize the atmospheric perspective in certain shots.

Learning Outcomes:

This was a valuable learning experience when it came to working with visual metaphor to introduce the themes of a film, with location photography and compositing.
