Underhazer - FPS Game UX Design

Underhazer is a first-person shooter with a twist, instead of simply taking down enemies, players find themselves solving puzzles and navigating mazes that challenge both instinct and logic.

I worked as the UX designer, running playtests and feedback sessions that shaped everything from character feel to moment-to-moment experience, fine-tuning how the game plays and flows.

Process:

As the UX designer for Underhazer, I conducted iterative user testing across multiple rounds to refine the gameplay experience. The process began with playtesting sessions where I observed player behavior and emotional responses beyond raw data. Through these tests, I identified key pain points including navigation confusion, insufficient path guidance, and cramped level design. I translated these insights into actionable design solutions, such as expanding combat areas for better movement options, implementing visual guidance systems through lighting and color contrast, and adding landmarks to improve spatial recognition. Each round of testing informed the next iteration, progressively shaping the game's flow from concept to refined experience.

Learning Outcomes:

This project taught me the critical role of UX design in shaping player engagement, where observing emotional responses proved more valuable than data alone. I learned to translate user feedback into concrete design solutions that balanced player needs with technical constraints. Cross-disciplinary collaboration with developers and artists was essential, teaching me how to communicate design insights effectively across different specialties.
