Oghma (WIP)
Originally designed as a tribute to On Being's Poetry Unbound, I wanted Oghma to reflect the host's contemporary voice, while honoring his connection to mythic storytelling. Despite its old-style (specifically garalde) conventions, Oghma wields a contemporary voice through a raised x-height and relatively high contrast. In FD2, a bold weight has emerged alongside interpolation for heavy and medium weights. Every week the family is refined through hands-on critique from Greg and peers.
Learning Outcomes:
Initially, in FD1, I learned about balance, contrast, and spacing letterforms, as well as how to consider a typeface as a system. I learned in more detail that optical evenness and balance are different from mathematical equivalents. In FD2, I continue to explore similar themes, but also begin to take a birds-eye view of the typeface and consider its overall tone of voice and sensibility. This has, conversely, changed how I view other foundry's fonts I use in my daily graphic design practice.
