Life Cycles - Book

For this project, we were asked to select an existing exhibition of interest to us, then create a corresponding book. I chose Life Cycles, an exhibition currently on display at Japan House Los Angeles. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, the featured artist of this exhibition, encourages us to think and reflect upon the connections that exist between past and present, nature and culture, tradition and modernity. I divided the book into 3 sections -- past, present and future -- as a mode of organization.
Learning Outcomes:
In the process of designing this book, I learned how to effectively systematize the organization of typography and hierarchical levels within. Creating a 7-column grid on each page was an effective first step -- I've found that an odd number of columns works quite well for editorial spreads. Adopting the spirit of informed decision-making and establishing editorial intentions early in the project helps facilitate the design as it unfolds, week after week. I'm excited to see its completion.
