Life Cycles – Exhibition

For this project, we were asked to select an existing exhibition of interest to us, then creating a corresponding logotype and exhibition wall design. I chose Life Cycles, an exhibition currently on display at Japan House Los Angeles. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, the featured artist of this exhibition, encourages us to think and reflect upon the connections that exist between past and present, nature and culture, tradition and modernity.
Learning Outcomes:
In the process of generating a logotype, I wanted to convey the quietude and tranquility that is inherent in the bamboo groves of Japan, while communicating the sophistication of the artist's work. The typeface that I selected (PP Telegraf Regular) is a contemporary san-serif that is not only rectangular in form, but also features quirky curved shapes. This references the simultaneous strength and pliability of the bamboo material, and of the balance between various dichotomies referenced above.
