This project reframes CPAP from a clinical medical device into a transformative self-care and performance-recovery tool. It introduces two facial mask options, a modular, travel-ready console, and an integrated system designed to make CPAP treatment feel seamless, intuitive, and genuinely supportive. The goal is to elevate CPAP beyond “good enough,” enabling it to fit naturally into an athlete’s daily routine and fully enhance their recovery process.

Process:

The design process began with extensive research, including patient interviews and firsthand testing of CPAP machines to understand real pain points and opportunities. After defining the target audience, we studied their daily routines, performance demands, and lifestyle behaviors to ensure the solution would integrate naturally into their recovery flow. From there, we built moodboards to establish visual and emotional direction, followed by rapid sketches, mock-ups, and iterative refinements. The concept was then developed through detailed 3D modeling, 3D-printed prototypes with painted finishes, and high-fidelity renderings that brought the final design to life.

Learning Outcomes:

Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of how to translate user pain points into meaningful design opportunities, especially within medical and performance-driven contexts. Conducting patient interviews and testing the device myself strengthened my ability to gather and interpret firsthand insights.  I also sharpened my skills in visual direction, rapid prototyping, iterative refinement, and building a cohesive product ecosystem. Finally, taking the concept from research to sketches, mock-ups, 3D modeling, printing, and rendering reinforced my end-to-end design process and improved my ability to communicate a complex system through clear storytelling.
