Great Writers Booklet (Toni Morrison)
River assigned a booklet where we could choose from a list of writers. I chose Toni Morrison for her accomplishments as the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize. We were asked to make intentional decisions on imagery and layout to embody their personality and writing style. We could only use black and white imagery and type. I chose images that show Morrison in a very human style with texture and stark contrast. I contrasted long and short columns and used big pull quotes for drama.
Learning Outcomes:
This was the first project where we heavily considered layout choices of column width, running headers, and image placement in an editorial. I learned how small adjustments and changes from the default way of doing things can have a big impact over several spreads. I also learned how to organize my process to be more efficient with InDesign and in polishing my typography.
