Tyrus: a paper son

This project was to create a wordmark for a PBS documentary on the artist Tyrus Wong. The wordmark was also used in the booklet designed for the artist and triptych posters about the documentary. Take a look at the project in dept on my website.
Learning Outcomes:
This project gave me the opportunity to learn about new culture and work an identity in many different forms such as a book, poster and social media.

Tyrus Wong (October 25, 1910 – December 30, 2016) was a Chinese born American artist. He was a painter, animator, calligrapher, muralist, ceramicist, lithographer and kite maker, as well as a set designer and storyboard artist. Tyrus is a 2015 feature-length documentary directed by Pamela Tom about Tyrus Wong, whose paintings became the inspiration for the classic animated feature film Bambi.

The wordmark is a representation of East meets West. As Tyrus was an artist with very strong roots of his culture, I have the Chinese character of his surname 'Wong' and using a classic typeface for his name 'Tyrus' depicts the elegance he has in his in his paintings and calligraphy art. The booklet is an overview of Tyrus's journey from being stranded at Angel Island for immigration process to being the creative director at the Disney film Bambi. The brief for poster and social media posts were to make public aware of the documentary. The visual here includes eye-catching colors contrasted with monochrome images to draw attention.
