Badjao: People of the Sea

For a tribe whose people earn how to swim before they walk, a 10-year-old girl is terrified of taking the plunge. Muni is a young student living in a sea village in the southern tip of the Philippines, Tawi-tawi. She is a Badjao--a tribe of people known to dive to depths of 65 feet, all without oxygen tanks. She is the granddaughter of the village chief, Igong, and she is expected to dive at school for the first time, but the only problem is that she's afraid to swim. Will Muni let her fears get the best of her?

Process:

Countless hours of research and my special interest in Philippine history led me to make this project. I had also watched a documentary about the rich culture of the Badjao in Tawi-tawi, and found how incredible their abilities are.
