Sharing is Caring (2024)

How can "sharing is caring," can negatively impact young girls as they reach adulthood? From a young age women are told its polite to share, and its rude to not share. This idea can follow into adulthood as women begin to explore intimacy, but instead of sharing a snack or a toy, its her body being shared. The papaya symbolizes female anatomy as the figure in the painting is depicted slicing the fruit in preparation for it to be shared. The look on her face is confrontational but not openly angry, her body language vulnerable. The piece is meant to be uncomfortable, and create space for difficult conversation.

Process:

Experimental with character design and how a personification of the female gaze could be interpreted. Using acrylic paint to resemble watercolor which can be viewed as a childlike art medium.

Learning Outcomes:

Learning the value in creating art work that holds space for difficult conversations.
