TAO

The TAO have existed for millennia. Them and their island have been untouched by any other society in the world. They live and grow in harmony.

Process:

I had taken inspiration from the Taiwanese aboriginal tribe, also known as the Yami. As a Taiwanese person myself, I wanted to bring light to a culture that is so beautiful. Taking historical and cultural research and setting them in a new world, I was able to design and create a society that would fit the story both realistically and practically. 

Learning Outcomes:

I learned to design for both function and form in this project. Finding ways to tie culture in both practical and aesthetic ways was a challenge that pushed me to think in a more immersed way.

The village is vast and is supported by the large slate cliffs that sit behind it. The Tao utilizes their resources wisely, taking only what they need and giving back as often as possible. Their sustainable way of life has led them to develop over millennia.
The Blacksmith refines the metal ore found across the island as well as processing any scrap that washes up onto shore. The pangolins help collect and deliver material and resources throughout the island, making sure everybody gets what they need.
The Blacksmith's workshop is one of the foundations of the village. Responsible for creating the tools everybody works with, the blacksmith is integral culturally and functionally.
