Intuitive Repulsion

This is a sequential design optimized for a human-scale exhibit about 'The Conflicts surrounding Skateboarding.' It began with two ideas; Skateboarding and Malcolm Gladwell's essay "Blink". Skateboarders express their identity and how unique they are through skateboarding while the essay talks about how people make some judgments and impressions unconsciously. From there, I decided to focus on the topic, "Skaters' Value vs Public Perception".
Learning Outcomes:
I learned "See and Say" concept, word-image interdependency. By printing the actual size, which was 8"tall × 48"wide helped me to consider the text size and its vertical position.(if I place it near the edge, it's hard for people to read etc) Also, how important it is to give people enough contexts about my work. At first, my mind was preoccupied with its design and didn't take it into account much.

I directed the first part and the last part to the front, so that people can read the main sentence, "It was a wave of Intuitive Repulsion" first, and as they walk through, they explore skateboarding culture and history. When they leave, they can look back at the sentence again, and feel it differently.

Through mind mapping, I got to find some common things and opposite things between those two, skateboarding and the idea of adaptive unconscious from "Blink", which looked like there were no intersections.

Additionally, when you look at it from above, it's actually a shape of letter "Z", which came from the movie, "Dogtown and Z-boys". I got some photos and quotes from it.
