Jeffrey Deitch Book

My book encapsulates the personality of Jeffrey Deitch and represents his accomplishments as well as the accomplishments of others he has helped throughout his career. The typeface that I used for this project looks normal at a glance, but as you look closer you start to notice how unique and kind of weird the letterforms are. This was chosen conceptually to represent how Deitch looks like a regular person but once you hear him talk you realize he’s quite quirky and eccentric.
Learning Outcomes:
This was the first real book that I have made, aside from a few zines and I learned so much about pagination and creating a system. I also learned that I quite enjoy making a book and sticking to a layout, I found the process to be fun. I also learned that I am capable of making a book about someone I know nothing about. Previous to making this, I had never even heard of Jeffrey Deitch.

The engawa or entrance to the book. This section is contrasting images of Jeffrey Deitch smiling with the many criticisms that have been said about him. This represents the idea that although Deitch has received a lot of hate and criticism, he goes on with his life and doesn't change who he is, he embraces it.

To continue to show Deitch’s personality I designed the titles of each article to utilize different glyphs and interesting and unusual forms. Letting words cross over to the next page, having thin lines point you to the next word of the title and mimicking this as a miniature running head. I also utilized this technique on the front and back cover.

On many pages, I tried to create a mini gallery of images, because Jeffrey Deitch curates his galleries and I wanted to do the same in his book.

I also utilized colorful gradients throughout the book to not only add contrast to the white backgrounds but to draw attention to different pages of the book. It is also on the front and back cover as something pretty eye-catching.
