MBARI

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute(MBARI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing marine science and engineering. MBARI tirelessly captures and digitizes the ever-changing ocean, delving into the unknown, seeking understanding, and solving complex challenges. The project was to redesign the logo and design system of the institute. The focal point of the design was to represent the scientific and technological value of MBARI with modern graphic approaches.

Process:

In the initial phases of the logo development, the exploration naturally centered on forms associated with fluidity and transition, primarily circles, curves and other organic shapes. As the iterative sketching process progressed and as I systematically integrated the brand’s foundational attributes such as data analysis, technological capability and systemized intelligence, the direction evolved toward a more structured and conceptually robust solution.

MBARI’s pixel based logo includes meaning of MBARI’s M, and also the dynamic ocean’s wave. It abstracts data into a visual system that simultaneously reflects the ocean’s dynamic and ever-shifting character, capturing both analytical precision and fluid adaptability.

This single logo form expands into a range of variations that explore different forms, allowing it to capture both the many expressions of the ocean and the broader values and research that shape the brand. As long as these variations exist within the larger MBARI system, each form carries its own significance and remains an integral part of the identity, just as every piece of research and experimentation within MBARI holds its own value.
