Museum San

Museum SAN is an art museum located in Wonju, Gangwon Province, South Korea. Designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the building harmonizes seamlessly with its surrounding landscape. The museum emphasizes the interaction between nature, humans, and art, upholding values such as rest and meditation. For the rebranding, I focused on the passage of time in nature and employed pattern and color as the primary visual components to articulate the museum’s core values with clarity and coherence.

Process:

Instead of keeping original branding's muted and restricted tone, I actively used patterns and colors inspired by the nature and museum's architecture. Patterns were inspired by the shapes of shadows, the way light enters and spreads, and the gentle curves expressed in the buildings themselves. The color palette was derived from the shifting hues of the sky throughout the day. By using slightly more saturated tones, I aimed to create an inviting atmosphere that would resonate with a broad audience of all ages, including families with children.

Learning Outcomes:

While working on this project, I learned how deeply a brand can be shaped by its physical space and values. Translating architecture, light, and nature elements into a coherent visual system taught me to think more conceptually and holistically.
