Transitioning between places, time, and mind.
A third place between work and family that encourage people to reset their minds, focus on themselves, and digest their stress and emotions.
Inspiration
Throughout the 2-week research trip diving into Japan’s lighting design and craftsmanship, along with the rich heritage of light and shadow in Japanese culture, we concluded four keywords that are significant to the core of our concept: In-between, Hidden, Transition, and Layering.
Concept & Research
We categorized the places related to people's daily work routine, according to the duration of time that they occupy in the space. The under-stair spaces are the most common places that people always pass by on their way home, while usually being ignored and unused. Depending on the length of the duration and the need of level of privacy and openness, we designed "moments" that varies in different scenarios.
Material Exploration
We discovered a new material called PlaRain® provided by WAKO Plastic Co., which is made of intricately intertwined plastic threads. Its unique structure and transparency creates different levels of privacy by allowing light to shine through while blocking people's sight. Layers of overlapping materials creates appealing visual effects under projections inspired from the four seasons, while providing varies degrees of privacy depending on people's need.
Real-World Application
We proposed that spaces created under and in between the sheets of material can be applied to varies environments and contexts, including but not limited to metro stations, office spaces, and other public spaces.
