MFA in Graphic Design - 2 Yr Path — Graduate Graphic DesignTowards A Free Revolutionary Poster
The Brief: Make a poster series inspired by a design manifesto.
The Selection: André Breton and Leon Trotsky's 1938 Towards a Free Revolutionary Art
The Result: A modern adaptation of the call for a free revolutionary art made in Fall 2024, at the exact moment when the denial and censorship of a live, documented genocide was playing out in real time on our cellular devices.
I began by reading the source material thoroughly and getting a firm understanding of the spirit embodied in that text. The parallels between then (1938) and now (2024) were striking. Then I let art do its thing and reflected these back through the design. The series uses juxtaposition and irony to drive the political commentary forward, letting the source material speak directly to the present moment.
Design is extremely cathartic.
Two posters in this series were selected for the ArtCenter gallery.
